Varicorbula limatula (Conrad, 1846), Oval Varicorbula

Formerly known as Varicorbula operculata (Philippi, 1848)

When I was on Sanibel in December 2014, I found a large number of valves of this species in the drift at Blind Pass on the Captiva side. There were far fewer of the left valves than the right valve, I assume because the left valves are so fragile that many of them broke before they washed up.

There was major beach re-nourishment on Captiva early in 2014, so I think that a lot of shells of somewhat deeper-water species are still washing up.
